Book Three: Scarred by Emily Mcintire

Hey ladies and Gents,

I started Scarred the same day I finished Hooked, both are by Emily Mcintire. Emily continues to amaze me with her ability to reference the original story. Scared is a retelling of The Lion King. Now, obviously, because this is a dark retelling (don't let your kids read) we get the story from The Scared Prince (Tristan).

Tristan is the younger brother of King Michael the third. As young children Michael was terrible to Tristan, he was always beating Tristan or emotionally abusing him. As Tristan gets older, he starts dreaming of killing Michael. This he sets into motion but by the time he is ready to make his move a new player jumps onto the board.

Sara heads to the castle to avenge her family. Her Father went to talk to the king years before and had not returned. With her uncle and cuisines help she is able to head to the castle as the king's bride to be.

Sara heads to the castle to avenge her family. Her Father went to talk to the king years before and had not returned. With her uncle and cuisines help she is able to head to the castle as the king's bride to be.

From the second Tristan sees Sara her seems to be enthralled by her. Sara runs into Tristan multiple times. At times and in places she should not be. They have frequent run ins but only after Sara sees Tristan with Simon (Michael's bastard son) does she start to soften towards him.

Due to the softening of her heart towards Tristan Sara starts to question if she needs to kill him as well. When her uncle turns up, he drops the bomb that the Faasa family was not the one who killed her father. In reality, it was the Rebal King and his jackals that killed him. With this new information Sara starts to plan on taking down the Rebal King as well.

One night Sara fallows two people to Tristans hideout and learns that he is the Rebal King. After realizing that Tristan killed her family Sara feels betrayed.

Sara decides that she has to kill him. When she finds him in the church. Tristan already knows what she is planning, and he has already decided that he would go with whatever decision she made. I was actually concerned for a little bit about what was going to happen.

In the end Sara decides to pass on murdering Tristan. I Instead Tristan is able to convince Sara that he did not kill her father but instead her uncle was the one who killed him. With this information she starts to plan the rebellion with him.

The night I thought they were going to win the crown; Emily throws a curve ball. Michael finds out before they can finish. Rather than being able to kill Michael, Tristan gets caught. To save him Sara leads the Rebels to the castle. Unfortunately, they are slaughtered. Tristan gets away but Sara got caught. After a few days Tristans plan to save Sara is set in action, he sets fire to the town, sending a message to Michael saying he would burn down the town until Michael releases Sara to him.

Michael lets the fire get all the way to the castle and it's not until Tristan is inside that he does anything about it. In the end Tristan kills Michael, Sara gets free, and Tristan gets the crown.

A few years later when Simon has all grown up, he comes back, and Tristan gives him the crown. This gives Tristan and Sara time to themselves. By giving the crown to Simon, Tristan acknowledges him as the rightful heir to the throne. This also brings us back to The Lion King story line.

The Scared prince steals the crown, then the original king's son comes back and takes over. Like I have said many times before, Emily brings the plot back to the story she is retelling incredibly well. She even makes it hard to see them coming. It's actually amazing how well she does it. Some of the things that she puts in the books make me question due to the toxicity of her characters however, her writing prowess continues to amaze me.

Sincerely,

Harper
